IR in Appliance Manufacturing
Manufacturers of consumer goods / white goods have a number of opportunities to benefit from efficient infrared heat. The unique properties of IR technology -- precise targeted heat, even distribution of heat, low power consumption and quick response -- work together to provide effective solutions to the process heating challenges faced by appliance manufacturers. Here are some examples.
- Metal parts for technical consumer products are powder-coated in a manufacturer's new production. Optimal utilization of floor space is a key concern. Heraeus found that its electrical infrared heaters can cure the powder more than 50% faster than a convection oven, making a much shorter drying tunnel possible. Tests showed that for this application, medium-wave infrared heaters are best suited for the task because their emitted wavelength is well absorbed by the powder.
- A white goods manufacturer wanted a better way to melt sound-deadening bitumen pads on dishwasher casings. They replaced their ceramic heaters with a Heraeus Noblelight module featuring fast mediumwave infrared lamps. The modules were designed to the shape of the objects to be heated. Faster heating resulted in a 20% increase in production speed, and a power consumption reduction of 30%.
- The coil coating process is also well-served by infrared heat. Appliance manufacture makes extensive use of metal coil for products, and infrared heat assists in the process. Coils of sheet metal are pre-painted prior to assembly of appliances and other consumer items. This extremely high-speed process applies paint to rolls via powder coating or spray painting, and then, after curing, re-rolls the sheet metal for later use. Many steel manufacturers have brought this coil coating process in-house as a means of adding value to their customers (consumer goods manufacturers, etc.).
