IR in Carpet and Flooring Manufacturing

Manufacturers of diverse products for flooring -- tile, carpet, wood and other composites -- use infrared technology to make their processes more efficient. IR affords these manufacturers a number of benefits over other process heating approaches. Here are a few examples.

  • A carpet manufacturer installed Heraeus Noblelight fast mediumwave infrared heaters into its production line to melt glue on carpet backsides. Line speed was increased, better heat penetration resulted, and infrared provides homogeneous heating over the entire width of the carpet.

  • A manufacturer of cushion flooring (for residential kitchen, bathroom and similar applications) uses carbon mediumwave infrared heaters from Heraeus Noblelight to preheat the product prior to embossing. The system is thyristor controlled through use of optical pyrometers and control panel.

  • A combination of efficient infrared radiation and "air knife" iis used to dry water-based foundation coatings on parquet flooring tiles. The UV primer on these tiles must be completely dried before any following coating stages. An airknife heats the water with Heraeus infrared lamps and the additional air stream removes the ensuing water vapor from the coating. This eliminates the need for vapor barriers and makes the coating drying even more effective.

  • A carbon mediumwave heat system from Heraeus Noblelight helps a flooring manufacturer produce improved finish on its vinyl flooring while providing in-process material savings. The quick heat-up properties of IR are critical; when line stoppages occur, heat is cut off, preventing damage to in-process product.
