Drying Plastics With IR

Plastics drying is one of the more popular uses for infrared technology. With its highly targeted and evenly-applied heat qualities, IR is an excellent source of process heat for plastics drying applications. Here are a few of the many examples of Heraeus technology in this area.

  • An international manufacturer of latex gloves for a wide variety of applications sought methods to increase production to meet market demands. One bottleneck in production was the drying of the latex gloves. The old method -- hot air blowers -- resulted in a substandard level of surface dryness. With carbon infrared heaters from Heraeus Noblelight, heating and drying time was shortened significantly, and production was increased.

  • A manufacturer of insulating sleeves required a drying method for the silicon coating on the sleeves. Their previous method -- convection only -- was inefficient in a number of ways. The convection system required preheating, did not allow temperature control of the insulating sleeve, suffered from low production speed, and consumed large amounts of energy. A system from Heraeus Noblelight implemented carbon infrared heaters and a wavelength converter, along with closed-loop temperature control via optical pyrometer. The new system is more effective and efficient; throughput increased and operationg costs were slashed.

  • A carpet manufacturer had been using longwave heaters to dry the latex backing on its carpets. Replacing that system with fast mediumwave infrared heaters from Heraeus Noblelight gave the process automatic power control and lower power consumption.

  • A manufacturer of waterproof tissue (used for fashion, tarpaulins, tents, sails etc.) sought an efficeint means of drying PVC varnish on the PES tissue. Heraeus Noblelight provided a fast mediumwave infrared system. The new system nearly doubled production speed, saved energy and reduced fire hazard.

These examples are by no means a complete list. Infrared heat is an effective and efficient means of applying process heat in many other applications.
