Heating Metal With IR

Manufacturing processes involving metal can benefit greatly from infrared technology. The many advantages of infrared make it an ideal means to supply heat to metal processes. For example:
  • An automotive manufacturer found that the quality of coating on the steel was poor, due to the low surface temperature of the steel in winter months. A modular infrared system from Heraeus Noblelight employed carbon lamps to increase the surface temperature of the steel prior to coating. The result: improved and consistent coating.

  • A manufacturer of compressors installed an infrared booster system featuring fast mediumwave infrared heaters. The heaters allow fast on/off switching, allowing them to be put into use only when needed. Coating line speed was nearly doubled, and a wide variety of compressors can now be coated in a single process.

  • A motor manufacturer replaced its induction heating system with infrared heaters from Heraeus Noblelight. The new system -- featuring temperature control via pyrometer -- allows homogeneous heating around the product housing. This small inline system also reduced maintenace costs.

These examples are by no means a complete list. Infrared heat is an effective and efficient means of applying process heat in many other applications.
