Powder Coating With IR
Powder coating processes are well-served by infrared technology. The precision qualities of infrared allow even distribution of heat, resulting in consistent activation of the powder coat. Here are a few of the myriad applications of Heraeus infrared technology for the powder coating industry.
- By installing an infrared oven, a manufacturer of sealing gaskets has been able to achieve significant savings in energy costs in the curing of powder coatings on a range of sealing gaskets. In addition, the infrared system occupies less than half the space required by the previous gas-fired convection oven and has also allowed component throughput to be considerably increased.
- A manufacturer of MDF (medium density fiberboard) installed a short wave infrared heating system from Heraeus Noblelight to gell the powder lacquer quickly. The quick response time of the heaters allows precise control, flexibility in material and coating types, and energy savings (the heat source is switched on only when it is needed).
- Metal parts for technical consumer products are powder-coated in a manufacturer's new production. Optimal utilization of floor space is a key concern. Heraeus found that its electrical infrared heaters can cure the powder more than 50% faster than a convection oven, making a much shorter drying tunnel possible. Tests showed that for this application, medium-wave infrared heaters are best suited for the task because their emitted wavelength is well absorbed by the powder.
