MBS Blocks

Flexible Construction with Standard Sizes

These blocks have all the advantages of mediumwave twin-tube IR heaters with gold reflector:
  • Suitable for a wide range of applications because of the small size and power densities available
  • High intensity of radiation over a small area, due to the gold plating on the elements and a built-in reflector
  • Effective enough for one-sided irradiation in many cases
  • MBS blocks come preassembled, ready for mounting on user supplied frame or support system
  • Least possible energy loss by convection, because IR heating coil is protected by glass tubes
  • Excellent uniformity of irradiation by a single unit or when grouped together for larger areas
  • Not susceptible to temperature drops from air cooling or convection
  • Easy to mount without tools; mechanical quick disconnection
  • Regulation of output with fast heat up and cool down characteristics
  • Simple control possible. MBS units can be operated on a simple on/off basis, variable transformer, thyristor, or SCR control

Applications

Because of the compact construction of the modules, they are ideal for use for either flat or geometrically complex IR applications. The building blocks in the MBS range are specially suited for:

  • Technical applications that require small zone flexibilty
  • Laboratory and pilot line uses
  • Drying and heating in the small finished parts industry
  • Heat forming of thermoplastics
  • Items that have differing expansion or heat up rates
  • Low filament mass, fast heat up cool down rates are possible

With outside measurments of 125x125mm and 125x250mm with an output of 51.2kW/m2, there are new application possibilities, especially when typical larger type heaters cannot be used. Also, when the MBS blocks are used to cover a larger area, a very precise zone adjustment is possible. Because of the simple mechanical design the MBS units have a low weight to size ratio, and can be mounted to a user supplied frame or oven system.

Construction Design Features

The MBS units measure 125x125mm and 125x250mm. All units have four (4) reverse-side gold plated twin-tube IR heaters.

The reverse side of the smaller MBS unit has a stainless steel body and M6 mounting bolt together with a temperature-resistant spring and a wing nut. The larger unit has two such bolts, springs and nuts. All heaters have 85mm of fiberglass insulated connecting wire.

MBS Units 800/125 and 1600/250

Maximum power densities with these units is 51.2kW/m2. They incorporate four heaters, and the four connecting wires permit two-step switching. The pairing of heaters (1 and 3, and 2 and 4) allows operation of radiation fields in the range between 25.6 and 51.2 kW/m2.

mbs_layouts At left:
Layout examples. Figures 1 and 2 illustrate potential positioning of modules. For non-moving static applications we recommend the subject should be at least 120mm away (150mm preferred). Figures 3 and 4 show potential layout for a continuous operation, with recommended distance between modules and a heated substrate of 50mm or greater.
