It is possible to polymerize unsaturated polyester with the use of photo-initiators instead of peroxides. Photo-initiators are stable molecules that can be split up by irridiation with UV. The UV curing method does offer a number of advantages with regard to the classic curing methods:
- The resin is a mono-component system, the processor does not have to mix.
- The hardening process goes very quick, i.e. within some minutes.
- As long as the resin is not irradiated with UV, it will remain processable. Once it is irradiated, it will harden quickly. The application in the mould therefore can last as long as necessary. Once the mould is filled correctly, it will be available quickly for the following piece of work.
- Remainders can be recycled simply.
