ULTRAVIOLET CURING

UV Light: Energy for Clean Progress

The widespread use of UV light in industrial, technological, laboratory and medical applications is well accepted in today's marketplace. This is an achievement for which considerable credit goes to the developments and solutions provided by Heraeus. UV lamps for spectroscopy, curing of printing inks and coatings, dermatological therapy and for the degradation of pollutants in water are used with increased successes.

The reason: UV light is a low cost and clean medium for non contact energy transmission. It often provides the elegant, intelligent solution that is used to simplify processes and reduce equipment expenditure while retaining a high degree of efficiency. The development potential of UV technology lies mainly in the field of tailored light spectra — ranging from polychromatic to monochromatic UV light. The more precisely the spectrum can be defined or specified, the more direct and efficient its application will be.

Curing

High intensity UV radiation is used for curing and drying because of the fast and complete polymerization it causes in the material. An appropriate spectral output with high radiation flux ensures an efficient drying process is achieved.

UV-light technology is well established in the printing industry. Offset printers, silkscreen printers and flexo printers are aware of the advantages of UV. UV is used during exposure of the plates or the film with an UV-lamp, but is also useful before the drying of the UV-ink and UV-lacquer. Applications include:

3D Curing
FRPE Hardening
Ink and Lacquer Drying
Photopolymers
Sunlight Simulation
UV Glue Processing
Wood Lacquering

Reprographic

Metal halide lamps are generally used for high-resolution film exposures and in photo-polymerization processes. Such processes are, for example, the exposure of diazo materials, microfilms, offset plates and screen coatings but also the exposure of coating films and photo-resistant materials in the production of circuit boards.
